I’ve posted quite a few times on here in the past about potentially buying a boat or a PWC. Some of you are kind enough to my wallet that you’ve tried to talk me out of it.
But if you tried to talk me out of it, you failed!
This weekend I bought a 1996 Polaris SLT 780 and a 1996 Yamaha Waveraider 760! Both are 2 strokes, the Polaris a 3 cylinder and the Yamaha is a twin.
The Yamaha needs some work, previous owner says it doesn’t have spark. I’ve gotten some tips on what to check to fix. Hopefully it’ll be running by the summer. Polaris ran great. Can’t water test i n the winter unfortunately, but that’s why the combo of 2 skis and a double trailer only cost 1100 bucks. Plenty of budget to fix the Yamaha and do some small fixes to the trailer.
Enjoy the excessively 90s designs below! Due to the designs, when I showed them to my wife she asked if they came with a Fanny Pack. I then decided that had to be their names! The Polaris is Fanny (its bigger) and the Yamaha is Pack!

Awesome purchase, I hope you have a ton of fun! I haven’t been on out on a Jetski in a few years.
Some of you are kind enough to my wallet that you’ve tried to talk me out of it.
Honestly, this is probably the most cost-effective way to get on the water short of un- powered water transportation devices. The parts for these older ones are available aplenty and the 2-strokes are dead simple to work on, the most intricate thing is probably the carbs. With help of some friends I’ve rebuilt kawasaki engines in a half a day.

Had to take them at this price tag (they were originally listed at 1500, so I worked them on it too). All 3 components of the deal need some work. Polaris runs great but has a bilge pump that never turns off (he showed me he just unplugs it/replugs it in when he uses it) and a few tears forming on the seat. Trailer has a busted tail light and some rust. Yamaha needs to be fixed.
Either way it looks like I can drop the Polaris in the water and ride as soon as temperatures allow. And that’s an awesome start for only 1100 bucks!

I’ve watched a pile of videos on how to disassemble/reassemble 2 strokes and I sit there in amazement going “is it really that easy?” and I watch another and go, ok it must be that easy. Carbs aren’t a huge deal I rebuilt the snow blower one every year (4 stroke surprisingly) and I’ve rebuilt a 4 barrel for the Montego when I owned it.
Price was right and (as of right now) I feel it was 100% worth it. I’m excited for the summer! Of course I got them home and we started getting nailed with snow.

LOL, we just got the Jeep (08 JKU Rubicon purchased with only 15k miles on it) a few months ago to replace the Commander aka Icebox after it was totaled. I’d love a 90's matching theme but the wife would kill me for that, it’s her DD and the green on it is real nice. The biggest change it needs is getting rid of that horrid aftermarket rear bumper on it.

100% agree. I think people take the new ones way too seriously. These things are designed for silliness and shenanigans.

Congrats on the best day of boat ownership. You’ll never be without a project now. Actually, this is probably the cheapest way to get out on the water.

For 1100? 1) it might weigh too much. JKU Rubicon has 3500 max tow. 2) I believe we live pretty far a part. 3) we need a low bridge clearance height. Couple people in the summer group have modified their pontoons so that they can all sit on the floor to drive under bridges we need to get through. I may end up having to lay down on the Polaris to get it through!

Well I can’t say how much I would sell it for (probably not much more than that) , but I can tell you that you wouldn’t have a problem with size or weight.

Haha, I believe I was told there was at least 1 more great day of boat ownership (selling day).
But my wife’s family goes out in basically a fleet every weekend in the summer. 2 pontoons, a speed boat and now - 2 jet skis (sorry Kawasaki, it’s what everyone calls them, deal with it). I’ll definitely always have a project, but the hope is that at least ONE of them is always running haha.

Ooohhh I remember that little guy now! Yeah there’s already basically the same size boat going out with the group anyhow. Part of the equation is that we’re going to be going out with 2 pontoons and a speedboat (which is probably another foot longer than that, no bow seats but 2 captains and a bench seat behind with a 4.3L GM V6 I/O motor). So if someone gets tired of riding - hop on a boat. And once we get out to the place we all beach and hang out everyone can take turns goofing around on the ski’s. The Polaris can pull a tube legally too because it’s a “3 seater” so if the kids want they can go behind the jet ski if my uncle in-law needs a break from his boat doing the towing.

LOL. Well the 3.7L is pretty awful but I took great care of it so it was running great. It actually drove home in that condition. The biggest problem we had with it was the oil pan which rusted straight through to drip on the ground at about 70k miles. Thanks Chrysler.
the 08 JK has the 3.8L in it which I’ll consider an upgrade vs the 3.7L. I wanted to hold out for a 3.6 Pentastar but I couldn’t get good mileage with a solid price tag and a hard top (wife wanted it). So I found this one for about 24k with only 15,000 miles on it. We just hit 17k miles. On an 08. The damn thing is like it just came from the factory!

Hahaha, never ending amount of special edition graphics. It does say RUBICON on both sides of the hood in a nice silver. And hysterically the people who owned it before us had custom SNOW BIRDS decals put on the sides. Which explains it’s freakish low mileage.
I think we’ll just get some 90's windbreakers to go with them to where over some hopefully technicolor life vests.

putting that on the side would definitely get me in trouble with the wife. but mainly because she can’t stand the “P-word” featured on it. lol
old 2 stroke jet skis are a nuisance to absolutely everyone who isn’t allowed to ride it lol it’s good to be self aware about the situation.

He actually ran the Polaris. Took a few tries and a batter pack in the cold, but it ran great when it fired up. I mean all you have to do to winterize these is to tip em back and run em to get any water out, but also to put stabilizer in the fuel.
The Yamaha hasn’t run since he’s had them (he got them last summer, had em for half a summer then divorce started and he had to sell to split assets with now ex wife) so I plan on replacing some lines, removing the fuel and oil to replace with fresh stuff and of course getting some spark to it.

Congrats! For a split second I thought maybe you bought my dad’s old set, and they stayed together all these years! We had a Polaris and Yamaha around that vintage (forget the exact years), and I remember the Yamaha being purple. But I’m pretty sure we had a Waverunner III, not a Waveraider. I don’t remember the Polaris all that well aside from it was faster, I was little, and I manage to throw myself off of it and whack my leg something fierce on the way off. So I tended to favor the Yamaha.
Sadly, my dad sold them when the laws changed and my brothers and I would be unable to ride them by ourselves for several more years (had to be with an adult, which took away the fun, and meant my dad couldn’t bring one of us out at a time so we could go riding together).

Holy 1990's.
You know, the only thing I want a jetski for is wakeskating. Because you fall a lot, don’t need much wake (or power) and turning around for quick pickup is really helpful. We used to use a 40hp outboard on a 13' whaler. My 21' v-drive wakeboard boat is umm, hilarious overkill, but also a ton of fun to launch off the wake. Anyway, grab a wakeskate (foam top, not griptape) and get after it!

the rules for jet skis are pretty crazy. Also fun I could go out and buy like a 30+ foot boat and don’t need a boater course, but for a 10 foot jet ski I need one.
my oldest is 6 so he can’t ride solo for quite a long time anyhow.

Neat! I had a ‘99 Yamaha XL 760 when I lived in Florida. It was supposed to be a simple carb rebuild, but it turned into a total top end overhaul with new sleeves and a new head. I worked on it for about a year and a half off and on between deployments and finally got it juuuuuust right about 2 months before I moved to Oregon and had to sell it. I wish I could have found a way to ship it across the county. It was pristine when I sold it for $3,500. Oregonians think totally trashed skis are worth $5k, so I won’t be replacing it any time soon.

I don’t own any and I have to find some technicolor life vests to go with them still.

damn that Oregon price mark up applies to everything apparently. Sucks you had to leave it behind.
I’ve heard great things about the 760s so i’m hoping it’s something simple, i’ve got a few ideas to start with. They’re pulling into the garage by this weekend so I can start fiddling with them with some shelter.

Haha yeah, I wore a wetsuit as well as a hoodie, you can launch the ski in pretty shallow water. So I just did my best to stay dry . Towards the end I took a spill, so that was cold, but since jet-skiing is so physical it wasn’t as bad as you would think, I stayed fairly warm from all the exertion.
Technicolor is the way to go with pwc’s of that vintage!

It really was a simple engine and all around fun to rebuild. You'll enjoy it! And what it lacks in top end speed, it makes up for in the low end. Mine would smoke a supercharged SeaDoo RXP off the line!

A friend used to have a jetski almost exactly like your Polaris. SLT something or other. Same colors.
Wakeskating is a blast, lower speeds than wakeboarding and less-painful falls. Unless you let the board hit you haha. But you do fall a lot especially at first, hence quick turnarounds being helpful.

That’s what the Wrangler (
and Jeep as a whole
) is good at! Someone at work has a JK Golden Eagle. I’m not really a modern Jeep guy, but it’s pretty nice. The custom snow bird decal is amusing.
I like the ‘90s windbreaker idea!

Fellow wakeskater (in my youth) here. Can confirm. Jet skis are great for wakeskating. Q uicker turnarounds. When you say foam top, do you mean like the early Hyperlites they they just covered in thin foam, or like that Liquid Force sponge which was all foam and soft?

I’d rather have that acceleration giving the smaller inland lakes we’ll be on with them. They should do around mid 50s and they’ll be some of the fastest on the lake. The only modern ski i’ve seen on the lake is a seadoo spark so i’ll be able to smoke that at least.

Good lord, you were on a stand up, more activity on those to keep you warm! I’ll wait until May I think. Hopefully have the Yamaha running by then so they’re both ready. Getting them into the garage by this weekend so I’ll have shelter to start figuring things out.

Early Hyperlite, although I have a ~3 y.o. Hyperlite that’s got a foam top. I just fear the grip tape after ripping my foot open on one. Yeah, I wear shoes now, but still.
